Blenheim Palace is not the only lawn that some people have. According to the Office of National Statistics, the median size of a London garden is 140 square meters. London lawns, on the other hand, are 26% smaller than the national standard. This means that many people need the best small lawn mowers.

Many city lawns are smaller when you consider the area used by sheds, patios, and wooden buildings. These areas could reduce the lawn area to a mere 69m2. This is the same size as the lawn that this writer and his NW London neighbors had.

When looking for the best lawn mowers, size is important. While we have a great selection of cordless mowers in our guide, many are too big for an average-sized urban lawn. This is why we created this handy guide to small lawn mowers. A smaller mower with a narrower deck will make it easier to maneuver up and down small lawns than one that is several inches wider and thus heavier.

Because they are too noisy and large for urban environments, you won’t find the best petrol lawnmowers here. You won’t find the best robot lawnmowers here either, as it would take too much time to cut the grass in a small area.

There are a number of cordless and electric mowers in the collection. These mowers are perfect for small lawns.

If you fancy the idea of going cordless, you might not find a better little performer than this keenly-priced model from Teutonic pressure-washer manufacturer Kärcher. Its small 33cm cutting deck and 35-litre grass catcher is just the right combination for quick wizzes round the sward and, because it’s so light, it’s really easy to manoeuvre and carry.

Some small budget mowers aren’t very well made and sport spindly handlebars that wobble and aren’t very comfortable. This one, however, comes with a decent handlebar assembly that is both foldable and comfortable in the hands.

Its 18v battery construction is another great asset. Its corners are protected with rubber to prevent damage from drops from low heights. It also features an LCD screen with a percentage readout. It should be able to run for 40 minutes.

This mower cuts very well and almost to the edge. It also mulches for those who prefer nitrogen-rich cuttings to fertilize their lawns. Despite the lower voltage, this motor is a little giant that stops at nothing, even when cutting extremely long grass. The ideal choice for urban lawnsmiths.

Smaller grass collector

Not the lightest

Stihl’s lightweight lawn mower is a great choice for small urban areas. Aside from cutting the grass remarkably well – and right to edge – what really stands out is the way its brushless motor operates.

This mower has an Eco mode, which adjusts the speed of its blade according to the length of grass. It will ramp up to full speed when it is dealing with long grass, and then slow down to a gentle hum when it detects resistance against the blades. A system like this not only saves a lot of battery energy – we’re on our fourth cut and the battery’s only half way empty – but it also helps keep noise to a minimum. Believe me, this little guy is so quiet you could mow the lawn at 6am on Sunday and not be noticed by the neighbors.

The Stihl comes with a 33cm plastic cutting board and a smaller than average 30-litre grass collector. This can be folded to make emptying the grasshopper a breeze. Its easily adjustable cutting height range of 25-65mm isn’t the best in the pack but it’s perfectly ample for the majority of UK grasses.

Stihl’s reliability record is second to none – it is, after all, the brand of choice among professional gardeners and landscapers – so chances are this titchy gardenThe devil will survive a lot of summers.

A little bland

At 9.9kgs, the Bosch CityMower 18 is one of the lightest lawn mowers around and that’s a boon when it comes to pushing it and carrying it back to the shed. It also comes with Bosch’s famously comfy Ergoflex handlebar system that is ideal for both righties and lefties.

This model is equipped with a powerful 4.0Ah lithium battery that can provide approximately 25 minutes of cutting time. If you already have a set of Bosch power, however, this model can be used to cut up to 25 minutes. toolsOpt for the 18v system if you are using it. ‘solo’Instead, you can use your own battery to power the model. Bosch has a great reputation in this field so you can’t really go wrong with this model, especially if you’re looking for a smaller-than-average cutting deck.

Its 20-litre grass box is on the small side but it’s easy to disengage. If you need to adjust the cutting height, you will have to either remove the blade or insert plastic spacers. This means it’s ideal for a bowling green type lawn. It will only work if the lawn is level. Otherwise, it will cut some areas to the top soil. Collector of grass: 30L
Weight: 8.8kgs
Average run time: 30 minutes
REASONS to BUY

+Lightweight

+Very small cutting board

+It’s easy to store

REASONS NOT TO USE

Horrible cutting height adjustment

Perhaps a little too small for some lawns

This cordless Flymo rotary mower has the narrowest cutting deck on this page (30cm) so it’s ideal for really, really small lawns. It’s a doddle to store, too, because it’s not only the smallest folding mower this writer has ever come across, but it stores in an upright position with its 30-litre grass collector clipped to the handle bar. Nice. Being so small also means it is exceptionally light – just 8.8kgs. The EasiStore runs on two 20 volt batteries simultaneously, making it unusually small for a mower. This gives it a running time around 30 minutes.

The mower cuts well and can create stripes with its rear roller. The cutting height mechanism can be a bit cumbersome. You have to turn the machine over and move the front and rear wheels into a lower or greater position. Maybe that’s a price worth paying for a mower that is so easy to carry and store away. Incidentally a much cheaper electric version is also available for around £110.

HOW TO CHOOSE A SMALL LAWN MOWER TO SERVE YOUR GARDENING NEEDS

The cutting deck size is the first thing that you should decide on. This will determine the width of your cutting blade. For a small lawn this would be between 30cm (about 12 inches) – the smallest available size – and 34cm (about 13 inches). Mower sizes can jump to 41cm (16 inches) after 34cm. If you feel the mower size is too small, check out our guides to the appropriate models. best cordless lawn mowers and best petrol lawn mowers where you’ll find a wide mix of different sized lawn mowers for every type of garden.

They are ideal for city lawns, and they are amongst the most affordable to buy. This writer is not a fan corded models as the cable must be continually lassoed around. garden obstacles. Also, I’m not that keen on having a 240 volt cable in the vicinity of a fast spinning blade.

If you can afford the extra outlay, you’ll find a cordless model is about ten times easier to use – and much much faster since there’s no cable to get in the way. You also won’t need to reach for an extension cable if you haven’t already got an outdoor power point to hand.
