Two Pitmasters will compete in the 2019 Kosher BBQ Championship.

For its eighth season, the Texas Kosher BBQ Championship has returned to San Antonio. It is considered the country’s largest such cooking contest.

Sunday, November 6th will see 20 teams of Jewish pitmasters gather in Shavano Park to prepare kosher versions of brisket, chicken, and fish. They will compete for a $2,000 cash prize as well as a Grand Championship belt buckle.

Grilling meat will be done according to the Kashrut, Judaism’s dietary laws. These include making sure that all cooking utensils were properly sterilized. “kashered,”All meats, spices, or other ingredients are allowed by the Torah to be prepared, cleaned, and maintained. Tradition has it that a Rabbi will supervise.

The competition and tasting will take place at Congregation Agudas Achim, 16550 Huebner Road, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. — or until the pitmasters run out. The event also will include hot dog-, jalapeño- and pickle-eating contests as well as live music and kids’ activities. Tickets can be ordered online.
