GARDEN CITY, NY — The village is considering a ban on gas-powered leaf blowers, which could lead to quieter days around Garden City.

According to the Board of Trustees’ statement, there was a lot of community input regarding the environmental and health effects of leaf blowers powered by gas. The matter was addressed at a special meeting that took place on February 1. The Village’s Environmental Advisory Board recommended that the blowers be banned from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.

Many Long Island communities already have seasonal bans for gas-powered blowers. These include Roslyn Town, North Hempstead, Roslyn Town, East Hampton, South Hampton, Huntington and South Hampton.

“I support the work of the Environmental Advisory Board and the efforts of Trustee Mary Carter Flanagan in presenting their research, findings and recommendations,” Mayor Cosmo Veneziale said. “I am also in favor of banning and limiting the use of gas-fueled leaf blowers to the greatest extent possible to improve our environment. The health, safety and welfare of our residents is paramount.”

The board has not yet voted on the ban. The board will likely hold a public hearing regarding the proposal at its February 15th meeting.
